For 30 years September 11th meant a day of celebration for my husband and myself. That was the day two young 20 year olds began their life together. On Tuesday September 11, 2001 we had a fun day planned to celebrate our 30th Anniversary. We were going to take our one year old twin granddaughters out for the day to this quaint little town called Nevada City. The night before I came down with a very high fever and our plans had to be cancelled. Mike decided to stay home from work anyway. He's an aircraft mechanic for United Airlines in San Francisco.
I called my sister in the morning to tell her I was sick with a really high fever and we weren't able to go to Nevada City with the girls. She asked me if I had seen the news. I never have the TV on in the morning so I hadn't seen or heard anything. She told me an American Airlines jet had flown into the World Trade Center and United Flight 175 had also crashed. I quickly turned on the TV and went and got Mike out of bed. Shortly after we heard United Flight 93 had crashed somewhere in rural Pennsylvania. Then the news of yet another American Airlines flight crashing into the Pentagon. We both sat there in disbelief! Needless to say Mike spent most of day watching the news coverage of that tragic event. Being an employee of United since 1968 this was really hard to comprehend. Our day to celebrate our 30th anniversary had turned into a horrible tragedy.
Even after nine years it still brings such a sense of sadness our country has never recovered from. I will never forget that horrible day and my heart goes out to the families who lost their loved ones in the air and on the ground. Since it's a day we now have to share with our anniversary I have done my best to remember it also as a happy day.
A look into our day 39 yrs. ago!
So young!
The Kiss!
My niece Michelle with her mom's bouquet. She couldn't be the flower girl (but as you can see she still wanted to be a part of the wedding party) because she had a little minor surgery on her foot and couldn't wear both shoes. :) In fact that was the first time she ever let Mike hold her hand. Maybe she was waiting till he was officially her Uncle! She used to look at him and SCREAM cry! LOL
Our Limo!
Happy 39th Anniversary Mike! Thanks for sharing the last 39 years with me and for giving me two wonderful sons!
We are going to spend the day watching our granddaughters play in their first soccer games of the season. Then the two of us are going to have a great dinner at a restaurant on the Sacramento River.
Thank you for your visit today and thanks to Beverly for hosting our event today.
Happy anniversary Denise! I know this must be a hard day to be thinking about celebrating but it is on a day like today when it is most important to think about all of the good things in our world. Blessings and best wishes to you both on this happy and special day! I hope your dinner is very romantic!

Happy anniversary to you and your dear hubby. May your be blessed with many more years of happiness.
ReplyDeleteAnd, I must say, although 9/11/01 goes down as a sad, sad day, God DID good things that day. Very good friends of ours gave birth to a sweet and precious little girl that morning...at about 9:00 Eastern Time. So, around the very moment planes were doing their damage, a precious little life was coming into the world.
Blessings to you,
Patti
What a beautiful bride you were! Happy anniversary, I'm sure it was a devastating day for both you and your husband 9 years ago. My sister was an airline attendant for United and probably joined about the same time your husband did. Shortly after 9-11 my sister retired. It was very hard on her as I'm sure you and your husband can relate. HPS, Marcia over in Turlock
