While my husband and I were on a Hawaiian cruise celebrating our 35th anniversary our ice maker decided to leak all over our wood floors! We were gone 13 days so I have no idea how long after we left it decided to ruin my kitchen. It warped our kitchen cabinet around the fridge ruined our new baseboards all the way out to the entry and quite of bit of our new wood floor. I had an extended service contract for the fridge but they don't fix your floor of course. It was covered under our homeowners policy (not without an increase in our premium ha ha) so they sent us a check to redo the whole kitchen and family room since the floor couldn't be matched. We lived with it for 3 years and when we decided to remodel our bathrooms we decided to redo the floors throughout the whole house which was carpet and tile.
Okay so now for the real reason for this post. LOL I had to start from the beginning or it wouldn't have made sense! :) Our kitchen was designed very poorly to say the least. You know you just don't see everything when you're looking at homes. You have to live in them right? Our kitchen nook area was sooooo small you couldn't pull the chair out without hitting the granite counter on the island. It drove me crazy never being able to sit comfortably at the table. After many discussions with my contractor he drew up a plan for a new island that would be a very different shape and eliminate that problem. I knew if I was ever going to be able to fix this problem this would be the right time since we were doing the floor over.
See what I mean?
Now you can see the shape of the island. You know it had to really drive me crazy to have to throw away all that granite. :(
Demolition day!
Steve managed to cut a really nice square piece on the end that we
used for a counter on a cabinet in the laundry room.
Last bit of granite!
Laundry room cabinet. So we really only threw away 90% of the granite!
Didn't know we had water damage and mold growing!
I have lots of room to pull the chair out now!
Sophie didn't seem to mind the mess and as you can see it didn't interrupt her nap in any way!
The big white trouble maker! It got sent to the garage! I'm sure it will never leak again now!
New island!
Poor Sophie is wondering where her food and water bowls are!
If looks could kill! LOL
The new granite is here!
I think I was holding my breath during this process!
I found your food and water Sophie!
Floor demo day! See the dust in the air?
I felt bad for my floor guys because the IDIOTS men who installed the floor used the wrong kind of glue and they had to cut the entire floor in small little pieces. Not to mention the dust I had to deal with! I'm not quite sure how I lived through this! He's only smiling cause he's getting paid to deal with it! LOL
This reminds me of what they say about child birth...once you see the baby you forget how much it HURT! Who ever said that never had kids I'm sure! :)
I do love it but I will never FORGET the mess!
I love the silverware drawer Steve made me.
You can see you can pull the chair out and not hit the granite. It was the only solution other than moving and that wasn't going to happen!
Thanks for stopping by today. Hope this post didn't take up too much of your day! :) Believe it or not I left some things out! LOL
your kitchen is beautiful, I love the cabinetry, perfect choice of colors. Oh the dust, I almost forgot about the dust! we had to re-do our kitchen years ago too and there was a lot of dust.
